i guess i like to have a sunday post cos it makes me re-think through and reflect upon the sermon of the day. we're on to the 4th week of the Theology for Dummies series. and the topic is.... sin.
it was interesting because the pastor touched a bit on relativism and certain reowned (even non-christians, rather, anti-christians) professors' scathing comments about it. Also, the whole concept of moral law and what they call the 'law of the stop sign' and the 'law of the fire'.
[Law of the stop sign works like this - a town has a busy intersection that people always speed by, so the city council meets and decides to put a stop sign so they can fine people who break the law. but some time later, if say a highway is build around the town and the traffic that passes through the town dwindles, the city council then decides to remove the stop sign, thus removing the law.
Law of the fire is different. All the reowned and wisest people in the world can come together and meet and decide that fire does not burn anymore. But the first person who goes and touches fire and gets burn will know that it does'nt matter what people say, fire still burns! the 'punishment' of the fire is inherent and intrinsic. and that is the moral law. guilt is our sense of punishment]
so basically in short, sin is three things:
1) not reaching the line, which here refers to the glory and perfection of God that we fall short of.
2) Crossing a line, as seen in 1 John 3:4.
3) Twisting of the line. take the instance of a long piece of duct tape. useful and wonderful yea? (definitely for fencers and i think army guys. i've heard stories of black duct tape and how it does wonders for EVERYTHING haha) but twist the duct tape and tangle it, and it certainly has no more use anymore. a bit like our life isn't it?
that said, sin doesn't need to be reformed, it needs to be REMOVED.
guess particular apt was having communion after that sermon. once in a while, you confront your sinful nature and it stares at you in the face, and that strikes so deep. the fullness of His grace for a worthless sinner... how can we not worship the One who loves so deep? especially with valentine's coming up, the all-giving, all-encompassing love is the thing to really reflect upon.
"How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!" - 1 John 3:1
okay so that was church. there was lunch and grocery shopping (again) which is becoming the sunday routine. 5 lbs worth of clementines... i'm getting my fruits eh? one gallon of chocolate 1%fat milk (the 1% thing takes away some of the guilt haha) oh oh try this. choc milk and oats. like uncooked oats. seriously, it's absolutely delicious. my senior has totally convinced me haha.
hmm it's the vengeance of the midterms. this wk and next are gonna be terrible. the weekend flew by and no, i haven't studied nearly half as much as i should have. which is baaaaaad. back to econs i guess. i'm lost somewhere between the pages of trying to remember how many percent of what goes to what in the US economy. someone please remind me that this is vaguely useful to my future.
guess i should juz go sleep before i fall flat over my text book.
oh and today's the last day of cny. we had like self-made tangyuans to celebrate it over an episode of simpson's (and you wonder where all my time goes. but hey i did study for 5 hours+ today so at least i wasn't slacking altogether :)
been learning driving from a senior, together with like 3 others from my batch. and well, let's juz say the first time i went out onto the road by doing a right turn, i did it the singapore way. which basically is the WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD. yes. am i not a great driver? =p
